It was Charlemagne's grandson, Charles the Bald, who gave the [G 29 / Sancta Camisia] to the Cathedral of Chartres in AD876, possibly for the consecration ceremony of the cathedral. It had been given to Charles by the Empress Irene of Byzantium as a gift from the Eastern Christian Church to the Western Christian Church.
As the Virgin Mary became more important in the theology of the Western Church, the [P 017 / Sancta Camisia] gained more status as a relic. This in turn encouraged increasing numbers of [L3 206 / pilgrims] to visit the cathedral, providing a source of income to the growing town of Chartres. The Virgin Mary did, in this sense, protect Chartres.
